The Rolls Royce of Purple Drank Is Dead: Thanks, Bieber!

March 24, 2014 | Backdoor Pharmacist

Starting March 1st, Actavis, the “Rolls Royce” of Purple Drank, Lean, Sizzurp, Syrup, voluntarily stopped making their delicious syrup. Actavis’s cough syrup is noted for its very pleasant flavor that lends itself well to abuse. Their internal employee news site confirmed the news. What reputable company wants to be associated with the tabloid bait that Bieber’s become?

And we recently made the bold and unprecedented decision to cease all production and sales of our Promethazine Codeine product following recent media attention glamorizing the unlawful and dangerous use of the product.

Kudos to Actavis for trying to protect their self-image and accidentally doing the right thing. Addictive drugs should not taste good. You should not be able to kick back with a big cup of Sprite and opiates. It should taste like medicine, it should taste bad enough that you wince when you think of the taste. Addicts are known for claiming they are allergic to other generics like Qualitest or Hi-Tech in order to get the yummy Actavis.

Purple Drank is the euphoric mix of codeine with promethazine cough syrup, a soda like Sprite or Sunkist, and sometimes Jolly Rancher candies for additional flavor. Codeine, like morphine or heroin, is an opiate, and the source of the euphoric sensation. Promethazine is an antihistamine, like Benadryl, typically used as an antinausea drug and has a sedative effect. This enhances the mild codeine high. Combined with wine coolers it’s a potentially fatal combination.
