Scratching the Surface: Foxxface

December 16, 2014 | Aymann Ismail

ANIMAL showcases a different street artist regularly in our feature, Scratching the Surface. This week, we profile Foxxface, who developed his style on the streets of Atlanta. That’s where he met artist Edapt. Foxxface makes work using found materials with whatever substance is available to paint with, be it acrylic, Montana spray paint, markers, or a paintbrush.

Name/Alias:
Foxxface

Decade you were born in:
Late ’80s/Rad ’90s

City you currently live:
Bourgewick, NY

Drugs or natural highs?
I keep it pretty green when it comes to drugs. However, I tend to enjoy a natural high once in a while.

How did you get your name?
It started off with the idea of creating portraits or characters that evoke some sort of expression. Then taking that expression and fucking it up. Created by a fellow ATLien, the proper way to Foxxface consists of tucking your chin into your chest, slightly cocking your head to the side, bottom lip snugged under the top chompers, and your gaze affixed towards the sky. I should really change my name to Fuxx Face.

Why do what you do?
The easiest answer would be that it’s just plain out fun. There’s something about putting your artwork on the street that keeps you going. I’m not looking for praise. I’m not chasing the gallery life. I enjoy the action of creating art and equally the action of putting it on the street. Simple as that.

How does your mother feel about your art?
My mum’s only comment: “Why are they all so scary lookin?”

Are you making a living off your art? How’s that working out so far?
I’m not making any money from Foxxfaces. That’s not why I do it. I have many other skills that pay the bills. I assume that if painting was my one and only obsession, I’d probably be hustling at it more and taking it more seriously. For now, it’s just something I like to do.

Fuck the art world or embrace the art world?
I’m indifferent on this subject. I enjoy all the people I’ve met throughout my social circles and I really despise a lot of them as well. People you think are your friends will easily turn around and stab you in the back. But we all know how that goes. I keep my close friends real close and try to squash my disputes but you never know who’s going to attack the home you live in.

Do you bring your smart phone into the bathroom with you? Why?
Yes. Taking poops is awesome, but it can be very boring. Why not have a read, or catch up on emails or social media while you’re on the throne.

Do you ever feel like giving up?
Yeah, totally. Like I said, the art world can be a bitch and very discouraging. But I like what I’m doing and why not continue doing it if I like it?

Suggest an artist to follow.
If you’ve been under a rock for the past two years, then you should probably check out Clint Mario. This guy not only brings a smile to everyone’s face, but he has been KILLING IT. Expanding his mediums, his concepts, and everything else. He is only going up and up.
