City Handed Out Lots of Tickets During The Snowstorm, But Not in Manhattan

Not only did Manhattan narrowly avoid January blizzard Juno, but a recent analysis of summons data by DNAinfo shows that the borough’s residents avoided a disproportionate number of tickets handed out during the stormy period.

From DNAinfo:

The city handed out a whopping 986 tickets in Queens and 896 in Brooklyn during storms between Jan. 19 and Feb. 3, including the blizzard that wasn’t, according to the Department of Sanitation.

In the Bronx, 559 summonses were written and Staten Island saw 308 summonses.

But Manhattan had a paltry 62 summonses, with most handed out by officers.

The department workers handed out tickets to homeowners and businesses for inadequate snow removal and for throwing plowed snow back into the street. But Manhattan was largely spared from the enforcement efforts because the usual ticketers were tied up with other duties. According to DSNY spokesperson Vito Turso, “Sanitation Enforcement Agents are being used to supervise work crews of emergency snow laborers.”
