Don Hertzfeldt’s Couch Gag For
The Simpsons Is Amazing

September 29, 2014 | Marina Galperina

Thanks to Academy Award-nominated animator/filmmaker Don Hertzfeldt, the couch gag of last night’s season premiere of “The Simpsons” was a small, brilliant opus.

The Simpson family travelled far into the future where Lisa and Bart’s forms became reminiscent of the aliens in Hertzfeldt’s Meaning Of LifeA cloud-creature made an appearance; its anus was not bleeding. The sequence then transitioned into splatters of sun streaks, filmed elements and symbolic communication, akin to Hertzfeldt’s Bill trilogy, beginning with Everything Will Be OK. (We were lucky enough to speak with the artist about it in 2012.)

It’s incredible.
