Forget Manspreading, Straphanger Violates Sacred Subway Border

April 14, 2015 | Bucky Turco

While there’s room for debate on what constitutes some behavioral violations on the train, there’s at least one fixed point of etiquette which is unwavering, immovable, incorruptible — and that is the pole separating subway seats. Although it may appear to be just a thing to grab as the train rocks back and forth, it’s much more than that. It’s an incontestable demarkation of public space, a crucial border that should never be crossed. That pole represents the last semblance of order in NYC’s transit system. If we lose that, we lose everything. Respect the pole. Don’t Polespread.
