Get Your Piece of Pawel Althamer’s Collaborative New Museum Work

April 14, 2014 | Andy Cush

Show up to the New Museum April 23-27 and you may snag a free piece of art.

Guided by renowned Polish sculptor Pawel Althamer, the museum’s fourth floor has been operating as a collaborative art space for the past two months, in which any attendee is encouraged to draw or paint whatever they’d like directly on the museum’s walls and floor. The work, titled Draftsmen’s Congress, closes this Sunday, and next week, it will be dismantled completely. As the art comes down, it will be chopped up and distributed free to museum-goers.

“It’s a space for creativity. That was the basic idea,” Althamer told me when I interviewed him about Draftsmen’s Congress in March. In his work, he added, art is “welcomed to come back, to be a part of life every day.”
