Horse Runs Away With Driverless Carriage In Central Park, Hits Cab, Charges At A Mercedes

June 10, 2014 | Marina Galperina

A runaway horse detached from its bridle last night and took its driverless carriage on an unsupervised loop through the Central Park, before exiting on Fifth Avenue and 59th Street, near The Plaza Hotel.

According to the union of carriage drivers (currently facing a possible carriage ban and Mayor de Blasio’s replacing the horse-drawn relics with quirky electric jalopies), there were “no injuries to the horse or to any people.” The horse “looped back around to basically where it had started.”

However, according to reports on social media, New York Mets outfielder Matt den Dekker “almost got ran over by a horse carriage running wild through the city.” Eyewitness Andy Peeke told PETA that the horse narrowly missed him and a tourist, then crashed into a cab. According to @ScottKevy, he saw the horse  “charge into a Mercedes Benz” with the carriage. “Then the Benz speeds off & goes into 2 people on bikes.” (Image: PETA, @UpperDekker@ScottKevy)
