NYPD Stage Another Protest At Funeral for Slain Officer

January 4, 2015 | Bucky Turco

Thousands of officers from the NYPD and police departments all across the country convened in Brooklyn to lay murdered officer Wenjian Liu to rest… and to protest Mayor Bill De Blasio. The majority of cops attending the service turned their backs, yet again, on outdoor screens showing the mayor as he addressed mourners inside the funeral home.

There was a handful of officers who didn’t take part in the demonstration. “You’re being very disrespectful walking around like that,” said one NYPD officer to ANIMAL photographer Aymann Ismail as he documented cops with their backs turned. After de Blasio finished his remarks, the police faced forward and NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton began to speak.

On Friday, Bratton issued an internal memo asking cops not to protest: “A hero’s funeral is about grieving, not grievance. I remind you that when you don the uniform of the department, you are bound by the tradition, honor and decency that go with it.”
