Performing On The Subway Is Probably Ok If You’re Promoting A Broadway Musical

August 8, 2014 | Sophie Weiner

The cast of the long-running Broadway musical The Lion King broke into a performance of the show’s opening number, “The Circle Of Life,” on an A train earlier this week. Subway commuters expressed their usual levels of apathy, but the internet ate the video up — it has already surpassed 1.5 million views.

Other subway performers haven’t been so lucky this year, as the NYPD focused their “broken windows theory” policing on them. The city has been cracking down on “showtime” subway dancers recently, with cops arresting over 200 so far, almost four times more than last year.
