Rockaway Ferry Will Run Through Summer

May 13, 2014 | Andy Cush

The Rockaway ferry — instituted in 2012 to cope with transit outages after Hurricane Sandy — has funding to continue running through this summer while the city seeks a permanent third-party operator. According to am New YorkMayor de Blasio’s executive budget contains $2 million to keep the service going.

“Our local homeowners and businesses are excited about the increased presence that it will bring to Rockaway,” Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder said of the decision. “So many people who have found the ferry to be a great option for commuting to work will now have a guarantee through October.”

The city’s Economic Development Corporation is requesting proposals to keep the Queens-to-Manhattan boats running, asking that any potential operator keep fares at their current $4 round-trip rate.
