Airport Footage of President Obama’s NYC Visit

President Obama swooped into NYC on Thursday to get money from Harvey Weinstein’s rich friends, but we obviously don’t have video of the event that people paid tens of thousands of dollars to attend. But, here he is getting off Air Force One and then later getting back on it.

Listen as Compassionate Pilots Refuse to Commit Turtle Murder

An American Airlines pilot could have easily ran over a turtle that was obstructing his takeoff at JFK Airport during takeoff yesterday and avoided any delays, but when he was given the option to have it removed by an air traffic controller, he light heartedly responded: “Suuure.” Read more »

Jumbo Jet Bullies Smaller Jet at JFK

Want to watch an Air France jumbo jet thrash a smaller Delta jet operated by Comair while taxiing at JFK Airport? Of course you do. NBC New York scored raw footage of the incident that occurred Monday night and somehow resulted in zero injuries despite there being passengers on both aircraft. Read more »

Bring Back Floyd Bennet Field?

Even with its recent $376 million runway renovation, JFK Airport is inundated with air traffic, meanwhile, right across the bay, Floyd Bennett Field is sitting pretty and mostly still. The AP daydreams about reopening the historic Brooklyn airfield that closed in the early 70s and is now more likely to find bikers buzzing around its runways than planes, although occasionally, some do land there. Despite its decommission, the property is well maintained and owned by the National Park Service, making a revival unlikely, but this is NYC and stranger things have happened. Upgrading Local Airports Will Cost Billions

$15 billi. That’s what it would cost to expand Kennedy and Newark airports according to a new report funded by Port Authority. The study also claimed it is expected to piss off environmentalists at the local, state and national level as the expansion plan would involve “dumping fill” into Jamaica Bay, which as the New York Times notes, is “federally protected.”

NYC Airports About to Become Even Less Fun

You’ll no longer be able to crash your car into the terminals at New York’s three local airports after the Port Authority installs new protective barriers. Seriously, why even go to the airport now? The barriers cost $120.4 million–money that comes from passengers’ fees, reports the Mike Bloomberg Plain-Dealer. Has a car ever crashed into a local airport terminal? Numerous Google investigations turned up zero incidents, but maybe it’s because I use SafeSearch.

Flight Attendant’s Crash Mantra

A Delta airliner with a malfunctioning landing gear had to make an emergency landing at JFK on Saturday night and a passenger was good enough to film it on his cell phone. Listen to the flight attendant soothes those on board by nervously barking instructions as sparkly fly and the plane touches down safely.

JFK Is Back In Business

The main runway at John F. Kennedy airport was officially reopened this morning after undergoing months of renovation. At 14,572-ft., it’s the longest runway at the airport. Amazingly, the $376.3 million project didn’t go over budget and unlike the characteristically delay-prone airport, was finished on time and without the predicted chaos.

Cartoonish Governor Just Got A Little Cartoonier

As if Governor David Paterson wasn’t having a hard enough week, he decided to up his gaffe factor even further in this unfortunate photo op during the opening of a chain restaurant at Kennedy airport on Friday, which begs the question: Are his handlers blind too? |NYDN|

Air Traffic Control Kids Feel Terrible About Father’s Suspension

Like a divorce gone bad, the nine-year-old twins who went to work with their dad and were permitted to give directions to pilots from an air traffic control tower at JFK blame themselves for their father’s suspension. The whole family is reportedly distraught over the incident and saddened by the father being “demonized.” |NYDN|
