Offensive Anti-Abortion Billboard in SoHo is Down

That exploitative anti-abortion billboard in SoHo has been taken down by Lamar Outdoor advertising company after public outrage. The child model’s mom was “devastated” and surprised by the billboard because she “would never endorse something like that” and wants an apology. However, the anti-reproductive rights group Life Always still owns the stock photo of six-year-old Anissa Fraser and is using it on their site, far out of reach of vigilante vandals.

Crazy Lady Dancing In Soho

Jacob Cohen writes, “I was shopping in Soho and I saw this woman park her car, buy a pretzel at a stand and then she lowered the windows to her car and went to the middle of the street and started dancing.” Watch her move gracefully to the sweet serenading of angry Black Israelites. Anyway, whatever she’s on we’ll take two of. Good morning!

Vandal Protests BP With Mild Vandalism

The same BP gas station in Soho that was briefly occupied by activists dressed as marine animals last week, was also pranked by someone who smeared paint on their sign, creating a real life entry for Greenpeace’s BP logo redesign contest. Although it would have been cooler if actual oil from the spill was used, it still begs the question: Shouldn’t the owner consider cleaning the sign as opposed to asking BP for a new one? They seem to be a little occupied at the moment. |Photo: johanlammers| UPDATE: Cleaned!

A group is planning to “occupy” the BP gas station on Lafayette and Houston tonight at 6PM. Organizers are urging activists to dress as their “favorite sea creature or mermaid” and help drive away potential customers.

Exclusive Soho Rooftop Turned Into Impoverished Faux Storefronts

In promotion of their book on the city’s disappearing storefronts, photographers Jim & Karla Murray are opening MOM & POPism, a mixed media installation featuring over a dozen streets artists embellishing a selection of realistic-looking retail panels. Curated by sticker-happy street artist Billi Kid and set on the rooftop of Gawker headquarters—of all places—the gossipy multimillion dollar media empire is hosting the special event, an offshoot of their ongoing remant ad space for artists program. An invite-only reception is being held tonight, but it won’t officially open to the public until Saturday, August 15.

Iconic DKNY Wall Gets Browned Out

Last week, workers began transforming the four-story tall DKNY ad at the corner of Houston Street and Broadway into an ad for Hollister, which is taking over the building’s retail space. As of this morning, the painting of the city’s pre-September 11th skyline is gone with only the lettering faintly visible through the layers of brown. Soon, the wall will be finished off with the logo for the Ohio-based surf clothing company, rendered here.
