Two Officers Shot In Bronx After Confronting Robbery Suspects

January 6, 2015 | Rhett Jones

Two plainclothes officers were shot Monday night after approaching two men suspected in a robbery at a Fordham grocery store. The officers are expected to survive but the suspects remain at large. UPDATE: A suspect has been arrested and identified as Jason Polanco of the Bronx.

Police say that the suspects robbed a store at 363 E. 180th St. before they stopped at a Chinese restaurant located at East 184th Street and Tiebout Avenue around 10:35 PM. One of the suspects reportedly stepped into the restaurant and was recorded on the surveillance video embedded above. When the two police officers noticed the men and approached them, the suspect inside the restaurant ran out and opened fire on the cops. Both suspects escaped in a stolen white Camaro.

According to the Washington Post, Mayor Bill de Blasio visited the wounded officers at St. Barnabas Hospital a little past midnight on Tuesday morning.

An NYPD spokeswoman, Kim Y. Royster, made it clear to the New York Times that these officers were not being specifically targeted, unlike the attack that took place last month when two members of the NYPD were executed while sitting in their patrol car.

The independent organization COP SHOT (Citizens Outraged at Police Being Shot) is now offering a $10,000 cash reward to anyone who has information that leads to the suspects arrest and conviction.
