Artist’s Notebook:
Anthony Antonellis [NSFW]

January 21, 2013 | Marina Galperina

ANIMAL’s feature Artist’s Notebook asks artists to show us their original idea sketch next to a finished piece. This week, net artist Anthony Antonellis talks about the creation of his 3d Porn HD with Retina Display.

You too can be in porn… without being in porn! This is very NSFW. Obviously. You can see Anthony’s work right now at the Bronx Art space’s Rollin Leonard-curated show.

Most of the documentation of my work is incoherent, especially when it comes to netart or digital works. Even if I framed the data that eventually came together to form a work by introducing a narrative, it wouldn’t be very visual – mainly bookmarks, text files and folders of images. But there are a few cases were I’ve left a trail, like the one that lead to the creation of 3d Porn HD with Retina Display.

It was made for Camera/whore, which is a media and performance event in Vancouver, Canada, curated by Erica Lapadat-Janzen and Matt Troy. The exhibition is a series of conceptual photo booths and interactive installations. Sometime in June 2012 Matt Troy asked me to submit something for it. I’m not very good at producing off-the-cuff illustrative or thematic work, which lead to the following Facebook chat with Rollin Leonard.

That image at the bottom of the chat ended up being the proposal I submitted. Hours of programming coupled with a few dozen porn torrents carefully edited into a money-shot montage resulted in the site that makes the user into a porn star. For obvious reasons, the site dominates the top keyword entries in my analytics.
