Thanks to the 2010 U.S. Census, we now know that Williamsburg is filled with the most pairs of roommates. We don’t think they were counted, but the number of Orthodox Jewish children sharing rooms could’ve put that neighborhood at number one very easily. The census also shows that central Staten Island, specifically those in 10314, has the highest percentage of white and married homeowners, making it the most boring zip code in all of America. Didn’t need a headcount to tell us that.
That being a high instance of apartment vacancies in Brooklyn and Queens. In a place like New York City, that just doesn’t happen, even in the midst of a historic recession. Elected officials are hoping the anomaly will be useful in their official challenge to the 2010 census data and ensure that the city gets its fair share of federal funds, which could amount to billions if they can prove there was a processing error.
Because raw census data isn’t “human” enough but quirky sidewalk shapes are (what?), artist Anita Glesta has created “Census Walk.” The representational public art project has cement numbers sprawling over seven acres outside the Census Bureau Headquarters in Maryland. Read more »

Are there a lot of Republicans in Brooklyn or something? The Brooklyn Eagle reports that “only 42 percent of all Brooklyn residents have returned their Census forms, a lower figure than any of the other four New York City boroughs.” But don’t feel bad fellow Brooklynites or start blaming illegal immigrants, that’s still only 6% less than the rest of the city. |Brooklyn Eagle|

The 2010 census forms will be in the mail soon and they’ll include one particularly special box for people to choose from in regards to their race: “Black, African Am., or Negro.” Yep, we may have a black president, but it’s 1960 all over again! |Daily News|
