Turtles: More Dangerous Than You Think

A Brooklyn family’s apartment was destroyed after a pet turtle escaped its torturous container tank causing a heat lamp to fall down and set fire to nearby art supplies reports the New York Post. No one was home at the time and over 60 firefighters responded to the blaze, one of whom saved the six-year-old African tortoise as it was crawling around the kitchen.

Turtles Invade JFK

A runway at New York’s JFK Airport was closed after dozens of diamondback turtles started wandering onto the tarmac. Flights were delayed for about 35 minutes while the Port Authority’s wildlife team swooped in and safely removed 78 of the reptiles or as the FAA described them: “RWY CONTAMINATION.” Still, the trespassers could have suffered a far worse fate. |Gothamist|
