New York artist Man Bartlett never got to sit with diva Marina Abramović at her MoMA The Artist Is Present performance and look longingly into her eyes and have an awakening and cry and I did but don’t be mad though because…
You too can own a piece of Marina! It’s only a penny!
No, wait, it’s $120. “It’s somewhere in between appropriation and shenanigans,” Bartlett tells Hyperallergic.
Behold! Some tape. From eBay and Man Bartlett, it’s Where a chair was present (2010), mixed-media collage, 5 x 7 inches. Seems legit. Lemme ask her chair though, hmm.
It’s kind of like when Eva and Franco Mattes “stole” all those pieces of pieces of art but scarier because Marina has copyright control issues. It’s just some placement marking tape Man tore off as a memento because WOMP, “I went one day and waited in line all day and I was next to go, but I never got to sit across from her. It was my way of taking something from the show.” That’s sweet. But I’d be scared though. She’s a dangerous lady.
On eBay, Bartlett explains:
I happened to be in the right place at the right time that day, and carefully peeled one of the marks off the ground… I offer it to you today for a variety of reasons, but mostly in the hopes that it may provide joy/intrigue/entertainment for you/yours.
And possibly, loose hair follicles and skin sells. *Lick.* Ohhhhh, Marina.
I miss you.
