Robocop to be deployed: "The newest member of the NYPD weighs 400 pounds, gets paid $9 an hour and works midnights without a single complaint. And transit commanders couldn't be happier.

K5 is a robot that will patrol the Times Square subway station in the overnight hours. It's equipped with multiple cameras and two-way communication and intended to deter crime and to capture crimes in progress.

And it is equipped with a panic button that riders can use to alert patrol officers.

'We are taking an expensive camera network in the subway system and adding to it- supplementing to it, if you will- and adding a series of cameras that not only moves but a device that can connect subway riders to immediate assistance if the need arises,' said NYPD Transit Division Chief Michael Kemper." —ABC/Eyewitness News

“New York Police Will Use Drones To Monitor Backyard Parties This Weekend, Spurring Privacy Concerns." It sounds like a headline pulled from a graphic novel about NYC’s dystopian future, but according to the Associated Press, it’s real and happening soon:

"The New York City police department plans to pilot the unmanned aircrafts in response to complaints about large gatherings, including private events, over Labor Day weekend, officials announced Thursday. ‘If a caller states there’s a large crowd, a large party in a backyard, we’re going to be utilizing our assets to go up and go check on the party,’ Kaz Daughtry, the assistant NYPD Commissioner, said at a press conference."

Privacy advocate Daniel Schwarz of the @NYCLU told the AP that is all sounds very suss and and illegal. "It’s a troubling announcement and it flies in the face of the POST Act," he said. "Deploying drones in this way is a sci-fi inspired scenario."

As fictional as it sounds, ANIMAL interviewed artist Essam Attia in 2012 about a satirical drone campaign (pictured above) he conducted to "start a conversation" about the NYPD’S inevitable use of the emerging technology. Disingenuous broadcaster Fox News frequently traffics in lies, so no one’s really all that surprised when they gloss over critical details, but even by their shitty standards, the network couldn’t have gotten a simple story about an artist, a mural, and Donald Trump’s mug shot any wronger.

After being mocked by the internet for fawning over the booking photo of inmate #P01135809, Fox News host Jesse Waters stepped in it again, when a segment aired earlier this week of him smugly assuming that Atlanta-based artist Chris Veal (@caveal) was painting a mural honoring Defendant Trump. "The mug shot’s up on the side of buildings in the inner city," mused Waters. "The 2016 phenomenon is happening all over again." Except that it’s not.

Unfortunately for Waters, who cribbed a Fox New affiliate’s early reporting, the depiction was a work in progress and Veal still hadn’t put his finishing touches on it in the form of a spray painted caption in a speech bubble that read: "M.A.G.A: My Ass Got Arrested." The artist told the Huffington Post that he was both shocked and impressed with Fox News’ ability to propagandize his artwork. "When I saw how Fox spun my piece being painted I honestly thought, ‘Man, they’re good.’ To see it spreading all over right-wing media is wild."

The #MAGA media mill had a field day with the unfinished mural, spreading images of it online to push the narrative that a major backlash was brewing on the streets. Professional douchebag Charlie Kirk posted video on Twitter of the artist painting the piece with a wildly misleading caption: "The backfire continues."

Due to all the interest generated by Fox and friends, the artist is selling prints of the mural and hopes it becomes a teachable moment. "Many people lack basic media literacy and these outlets know it and use it," he said. "This is just another case of their propaganda and lying to their viewers. 70. That’s how many New York City subway cars were hit last week, establishing a new record high and milestone in the number of incidents the MTA normally deals with over 7 days time. First reported by @RespectTheArchitects, the "historical feat" consisted of several wholetrains getting covered from top to bottom. (For the uninitiated, that basically means that the writers involved painted unifying designs across multiple wholecars.)

The city’s transit agency confirmed the incredibly high body count to ANIMAL and provided the following statement from MTA New York City Transit Senior Vice President of Subways Demetrius Crichlow:

"Vandalizing trains is a dangerous, selfish activity that disrupts public service by removing cars for cleaning, creating unfortunate cleanup expenses. The MTA is cooperating fully with the NYPD investigation to identify those who are accountable."

Since 1989, the MTA has enacted a strict policy of removing any graffitied subway car from service. For decades, this strategy has been highly effective in reducing the amount of trains getting smashed. However, a few years before COVID, a shift started to happen, and the buff (and threat of arrest) stopped being the strong deterrent it once was. From then, through the hazy period of the pandemic, to this very day, local and foreign aerosol enthusiasts have been unleashing a relentless torrent of spray paint on train panels (and everything else), ushering us all into a new, and still yet-to-be-named era of graffiti history. 📷: @nycgraff.head
