Death, a Selfie

January 14, 2013 | Marina Galperina

“Deathly warning, violent deaths, gentle death,” vintage autopsies, necro-romance, skulls skulls skulls, Goya, Dix, Dürer, more skulls… Ohh. The recently-opened exhibition “Death: A Self-portrait” is a inquiry/somber celebration of the cross-cultural obsession with death and its artistic presentations, from Adriaen van Utrecht’s 17th-century Vanitas: Still life with a bouquet and skull to contemporaries. Memento mori.

Watch the trailer of the exhibition. Mmm. “Death: A Self-Portrait,” Various artists, Nov 15-Feb 24, Wellcome Collection, London
