Your Very Own Roving Graffiti Bot

February 1, 2013 | Andy Cush

Japanese artists So Kanno and Takahiro Yamaguchi created the above robot, which randomly creates artwork by moving back and forth while spraying paint at a wall. Designboom explains how the contraption works:

The chaotic artwork is achieved through a single automated arm provisioned with a rotary encoder attached to the fulcrum of the pendulum. as the robot sways from side to side, the swinging motion of the arm is intensified through the physics of inertia, which then manifests itself erratic painstrokes through the quick release of paint from the spray can.

Graffiti writers, beware. Soon, your job may become automated, just like everybody else’s.
