Carly Rae Jepsen Is Crowdsourcing Songs Now

March 26, 2013 | Andy Cush

Carly Rae Jepsen appears to be taking a page out of Rivers Cuomo’s book, asking her fans to decide the lyrics to her new song in a series of online polls. Unfortunately (but not surprisingly), what could have been a challenging, forward-thinking project is actually fairly sterile, as Jepsen and the poll’s sponsors–American Idol and Coca-Cola–are asking participants to choose from a selection of pre-written lines rather than compose their own. Sure, as a way to avoid the epic trolling that would otherwise surely go down the strategy bulletproof, but as a way create interesting content it’s rather bland.

But hey, if you believe in the gospel of crowdsoucing, the song portends a glorious, utopian future for pop music. Maybe the hive mind can write something even more oiled-to-perfection than “Call Me Maybe.”
