Kelly Cracks Down on NYPD Facebooking

March 28, 2013 | Andy Cush

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly is issuing an edict limiting police officers’ social media use, because the NYPD likes to focus on the important things. Cops will no longer be able to make reference to their jobs on Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Friendster, or BlackPlanet, or post pictures of themselves in uniform, as “Members of the service should be aware that activities on personal social media sites may be used against them to undermine their credibility as members of the department.”

It’s mostly frivolous censorship, but at least the order will also regulate some of the department’s more nefarious online activity, like  doxing released criminals on Twitter and posting racist nonsense about West Indian Day Parade on Facebook.
