Artist David Horvitz to Sell His Student Debt as an Artwork

April 25, 2013 | Kyle Chayka

David Horvitz sent out a tweet last evening saying he is looking for a collector to purchase his student debt. Damn, I really wish I thought of this.

Let’s assume this is a a sincere gesture. Can the transition of the debt from Horvitz over to the collector effectively be the art itself? Will it work better than the first time the artist tried this — in 2011, when Horvitz requested that 100,000 people mail a check for fifty eight cents to Sallie Mae in attempts at abolish his outstanding balance of $58,412?

The artist most recently hosted a series of life drawing sessions in Zucotti Park in which each participant was instructed to draw the police officers that were sent to monitor the park during the days of Occupy Wall Street.
