Report Reveals Subway Support Structures Need Inspection

May 9, 2013 | Andy Cush

Several sections of the subway that support elevated tracks are in dire need of inspection, according to a report from the MTA Inspector General’s office. No records exist of detailed inspections of elevated A, C, 2, 3, and  L train sections in Brooklyn, and three sections of the 7 haven’t been looked at in 15 years. There are also no records of inspections for the sections of the A train that collapsed during Hurricane Sandy, but the MTA says those tracks were thoroughly vetted in a 2011 audit.

Inspector General Barry Kluger is was firm the audits need to be made, and hopeful that the MTA would work to make them happen. “While it is obvious that the findings of these reports raise serious concerns regarding the thoroughness and effectiveness of the structural inspections program,” he told the Daily News“I am encouraged that (NYC Transit) has accepted all of our recommendations and has begun the remedial process necessary to effect positive changes in this critical area.”
