Making Gitched-Out GIF Art Is Easy Now

June 10, 2013 | Andy Cush

Glitché was already the best, most interesting photo app available before its update update yesterday. Now, it’s something else entirely. I’m just going to tell you up front: to get the full functionality, you’ll have to plunk down $3 (the original version was free, and there’s still a free, less functional, version available). I know you hate paying for apps. Just do it.

The original app allowed you to apply all sorts of Instagram-style filters to your photos, but unlike that app’s auto-nostalgia, these ones were actually interesting, turning ordinary images into splashes of pixellation and color. The updated Glitché adds some new filters, but more importantly, it also lets you make animated GIFs from those images. An innocuous-sounding change, but look at what it’s capable of. I should stress that I’m a mostly visually illiterate guy–I barely know my way around photoshop.

That one on the top left started life as a picture of my face, and took all of three minutes to turn into that cosmic rainbow nodding head. There’s bound to be some hand-wringing about making art too easy by the people who actually know how to do this stuff, but in my book, the democratization of tools like this one is always a good thing.  I can’t wait to see what people do with it.
