You’re a published author. Why did you decide to apply for an editorial internship at ANIMAL?
I thought that more than any blog based in New York, ANIMAL covers a wide range of topics of interest — from Laurel Nakadate and Marina Abramović to police corruption — in a way that seems to offer individual writers a lot of creative control. I want to collaborate with others to work on reporting on wider issues than I probably would on my own.
What are you hoping to achieve during your time here?
I hope to cover the topics I discuss below in detail and offer a unique point of view. To discuss interesting people and events that might be overlooked by most outlets.
What topics are you hoping to investigate?
Womens’/feminist news and issues, and art/literature in general. Lately I’m interested in Miranda July’s new project, “We Think Alone” that involves different artists/writers/athletes, etc. sharing the contents of their sent folders.
Who are some of your favorite artists?
Bunny Rogers, Jennifer Chan, Ann Hirsch…
What are some global and local issues that you care about?
A local issue that I feel passionately about is Assembly bill 2736 — a law that would make it illegal to use the possession of condoms as evidence of prostitution. Currently, condoms can be used as evidence, which puts sex workers at risk as it incentivizes them to not use condoms. It also puts people who aren’t sex workers at risk for being arrested. Molly Crabapple at Vice reported about a woman being arrested and charged with prostitution for simply standing around in tight clothes and carrying a condom in her bag. I’m interested in global issues related to sex work, coverage of women in the media (e.g. Vice’s horrific article on female suicide and fashion), and broader women’s issues (e.g. the rape crisis in India.)
