Atheist Monument Unveiled at County Courthouse in Florida

July 1, 2013 | Kyle Chayka

An Atheist monument was recently unveiled nearby the monument of the Ten Commandments sitting in front of the Bradford County Courthouse in Florida.

The monument itself the form of a 1,500 pound granite bench, complete with quotes from Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Madalyn Murray O’Hair, the founder of American Atheists. It may appear to be an agressive move by the organization, but it’s actually a community statement on free speech, in response to the Ten Commandments monument.

These Floridians were not happy about the religious monument being presented so prominently in front of the courthouse in the first place.

Michael Tubbs, state chairman of the Florida League of the South, isn’t pleased…

We do feel like it’s a stick in the eye to the Christian people of Florida to have these outsiders come down here with their money and their leadership and promote their outside values here.

Chairman Tubbs is unlikely to be legally required to sit on the bench any time soon.
