Staten Island Woman Buried in Wrong Grave, Casket Stolen, Lawsuit Alleges

July 8, 2013 | Andy Cush

A Staten Island family is suing a local cemetery for putting their sibling in the wrong grave, then doing away with her casket entirely. The bizarre case of the missing corpse came about when the family sought to move Juanita Scarfia’s body to a new grave in a family plot, only to discover she wasn’t in the old one.

“The whole thing is unbelievable,” said Nancy Roe, Scarfia’s sister. “We’re asking, ‘Who was accountable? Where is the coffin? Why was my sister dumped like that?’”

Scarfia’s corpse mixup comes after a long line of incredible tragedies for Scarfia’s family, including helicopter crashes, automobile accidents, and romantically inclined members of the clergy, according to the Daily News.

Now, the family hopes for restitution from St. Mary’s Cemetery. “I couldn’t believe the chain of events, the disregard for human rights and human feelings,” said Roe.
