Genesis Breyer P-Orridge Solo Exhibit
at the Warhol Museum

August 7, 2013 | Kyle Chayka

Artist and integral Throbbing Gristle member Genesis Breyer P-Orridge‘s first solo, major museum exhibition is currently on view at the Warhol Museum. Chronicling H/er four-decade-long career, the show features over 100 works, dating back to the mid-70s to the present day.

Much of the exhibition is centered around P-Orridge’s ongoing Pandrogyne Project in which the artist became increasingly concerned with the idea of evolving and transcending gender and eventually finding “oneness.” Together with Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge, the artist undergone a series of intense surgeries and body modifications to achieve that “oneness.” Since the death of Lady Jaye in 2007, Genesis, in a way, has became a pure and sole physical embodiment of the project.

By what they considered to be socially imposed limits on personal identity and on the language of true love, P-Orridge and Lady Jaye sought to merge their two identities, using plastic surgery, hormone therapy, cross-dressing, and altered behavior to create the pandrogynous being, “Breyer P-Orridge.”
