The gas station on the corner of 24th Street and 10th Avenue looks different, now with grassy knolls and artificial sheep. It officially opens next week, but here’s your sneak peek at the installation from earlier today.
These sheep are the sculptural works of the late French artist Francois-Xavier Lalanne. The completed “Sheep Station” installation will feature some twenty-five sheep dotting the artificial hills installed inside the station itself. The project is being backed by Michael Shvo, one of the most successful and much loathed brokers in New York City (pictured above). Shvo has purchased the filling station along with a few adjacent properties with plans to develop condos in the area.
According to the project’s website, explaining his “curatorial” intent.
Getty Station is a public art program based at the former Getty filling station conceived by real estate developer and art collector Michael Shvo to bring outdoor exhibitions to a broad audience in the center of the High Line arts district. The program centers on site specific installations as an opportunity to incorporate a classic twentieth century American icon into the contemporary art dialogue.
…and to create some positive PR around his future development projects, naturally.
