Last night, a crazy guy was running in the street near Port Authority and trying to get hit by cars, so he was confronted by NYPD officers at the corner of 8th Avenue and 42nd Street. He reportedly reached into his pocket, and pulled out his MetroCard and mimicked shooting police with it.
Two officers responded with real guns and bullets, missed, and hit two bystanders instead, sending people running for cover in the heavily tourist-trafficked area. A 54-year-old woman was hit in the knee and a 35-year-old woman was grazed in the ass. Police were able to subdue the “emotionally disturbed” man, identified as 35-year-old Brooklynite Glenn Broadnax, with a taser without killing him, or anyone else.
In August of last year, police shot nine innocent people outside the Empire State Building after a gunman pulled off a daytime assassination of another man, which is seven more persons than last night’s incident. Statistically speaking, that’s a marked improvement.
