Several bus stops along the Bronx’s Southern Boulevard will become impromptu listening spaces under a plan approved by Robert Steel, Bloomberg’s deputy mayor for economic development. The new stations, proposed by the Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation and designed by the Design Trust for Public Space, will play music that nods to the Bronx’s cultural history for people to listen to while waiting for a ride, and plaques will detail the musical history of the area. “We hope it will distract people a bit from the cold,” said Caroline Bauer of the Design Trust.
No word yet on what musicians will be honored, but the Bronx has a long list to choose from. Here’s hoping for KRS-One, Afrika Bambaata, Grandmaster Flash, Big Pun, and Kool Keith.
