When the longstanding Lower East Side dive bar Max Fish closed last year, word was it would eventually reopen at a new location in Williamsburg. Now, it seems, the Fish might be sticking to its old neighborhood.
Owner Uli Rimkus has a new location 120 Orchard Street — currently the Gallery Bar — and, as Bedford and Bowery reports, he’s received approval from the local Community Board’s liquor licensing committee. Now, the bar needs the go-ahead from the full Community Board and the New York State Liquor Authority. Rimkus writes in a copiously hashtagged Facebook post:
It’s Official!!! We’ve been approved by the Community Board for our new location on Orchard Street! The neighborhood pulled together big time for us and we greatly appreciate all the love! Shout out to our good friends R.B. Umali, Brian Boulos, Lindsey Thournburg, David Hershkovits, Nicolas Grasa and everyone that came out, spoke and waited all night for us. #love -ULLI (Mama Bear) #LES #community #maxfishforever #maxfish #nyc #lowereastside
