Smart Crew Reps Chinatown for Latest Neighborhood Mural Project

May 5, 2014 | Bucky Turco

After showing some love to Sunnyside and Red Hook, NYC graffiti collective Smart Crew — specifically DCEVE, SNOEMAN and ELMO — just finished up a legal mural for Chinatown on Sunday. But it wasn’t easy. “It took me three years to secure this wall,” says DCEVE to ANIMAL. “I had to go with a Community Affairs officer from the 5th Precinct to finally get it.”

Organized by Klughaus Gallery, the piece is located on Allen and Division Streets and not only spells out Chinatown, but also each letter contains very local, site-specific details that really make it relevant. From the implication of fake Louie Vuittons being sold on Canal Street to a tagged up box truck (RIP JADE BTM) and a Fung Wah Bus engulfed in flames, this mural has something to residents of the neighborhood and New York City alike.
