Richard Prince’s twin devotions to image appropriation and social networking convene in a series of photos the artist published to Instagram this morning.
The pictures — which seemingly document a new series of works — show Instagram photos screencapped from various celebrities’ and internet personalities’ accounts and then printed onto canvas. The caption on Prince’s portrait of the model Jessica Hart reads:
Jessica Hart’s new portrait 48X56″ ink jet on canvas. Will stretch it this week.
The Hart image has since been deleted, but portraits of Sky Ferreira, Pam Anderson, some guy named Pierce Cady, and others are still up. Sounds like the artist plans on producing physical works, but the copy-of-a-copy-of-a-copy feeling you get from seeing the photos in your Instagram feed has a cheeky potency all its own.
