Not Breaking or Exclusive: White Flags On the Booklyn Bridge

July 22, 2014 | Bucky Turco

This morning, it was extensively reported that the two American flags which typically sit atop the towers of the Brooklyn Bridge were replaced with white ones. According to a construction worker, they appeared to be bleached versions of the stars and stripes—think Jasper Johns. No one knows who put them there or why, but feel free to speculate wildly.

In 2012, graffiti writer LEWY had no problem evading all the police department’s post-9/11 security when he infamously painted the bridge in three locations, prompting security experts to ask all the same questions they did a little over two years ago: How the hell can someone pull this off with the NYPD watching the historic span night and day?
