Highest Ranking City Official Supports Legalization of Weed

What a week for weed. Days after the police commissioner and mayor held a joint press conference to announce sweeping new changes to NYC’s pot polices — ironically bringing them more inline with the existing 1977 law — the speaker of the City Council voiced her support for the full legalization of cannabis.

“It’s not something we can just do randomly, but with a thought process, and looking how it’s being implemented in other areas. But I do support the legalization of marijuana,” said Melissa Mark-Viverito, echoing the sentiments of her colleague, Councilman Mark Levine. “States are speaking. Based on the conversations that we see happening nationally, and how people feel about it, I think that it’s just something that is appropriate at this time,” she said.
