Game Of Thrones Becomes First TV Show To Hit IMAX

January 6, 2015 | Rhett Jones

If you are feeling impatient for the return of Game Of Thrones’s new season in April, HBO and IMAX have cooked up an appetizer to tide you over. From January 23rd to 29th, IMAX theaters will be screening the epic final two episodes from last season as well as premiering the new trailer for the upcoming season.

Pamela Levine, chief marketing officer at HBO tells the New York Times, Game of Thrones is one of the few television shows that has the scope and cinematic qualities to really support the IMAX format.” Considering it’s huge budgets and huge battles it’s hard to think of another show that could actually put re-runs on the big screen. For IMAX the move comes as part of a larger effort to turn around waning ticket sales by diversifying what they screen. According to the Times:

The company has had preliminary conversations with other entertainment companies about showing other television series and also has tested technologies allowing for the screening of live sports. Music concerts also are on the table, said Richard L. Gelfond, chief executive of IMAX.

There’s no way to know if a theatrical screening of Game Of Thrones will inspire Rocky Horror-style crowd participation, but considering the ubiquity of the Hodor meme, we’re willing to bet the beloved character will get the biggest reaction from the audience.
