Smart Crew Going All Country With “Greetings From” Mural Project

February 4, 2015 | Christopher Inoa

Last year, graffiti art collective Smart Crew painted a series of site specific murals in NYC. Each one spelled out the name of the neighborhood it was located in and each individual letter was filled with local references and elements that make up that area’s identity.

The mural project, inspired by classic vintage “large letter” postcards, is expanding, with a cross-country tour that will bring former graffiti writer and now legal artist Victor Ving to select cities to collaborate with local artists while photographer Lisa Beggs documents the results. According to their Kickstarter page, the artistic duo is hoping to make the creative venture appealing to both locals and tourists alike and turn it into a publication:

The ‘Greetings From’ tour seeks to create public art that will capture the pride of local residents for their hometowns and spark the interest of visitors and tourists. The two artists will travel to select cities throughout the United States for a year painting murals inspired by vintage large-letter postcards.

After each mural is complete, the documented story will be shared through social media in the form of video, photography, and blog posts. The entire project will eventually be compiled into a comprehensive publication.

So far, the project is a little more than halfway towards meeting its goal of $11,200, which is a paltry sum to ensure that residents of Bumblefuck, America get to experience some cool public art.
