Ron English’s Bowery Wall Is a Giant Branded American Flag With a Hulk Baby

On Friday, OG urban artist Ron English began to roll-out his work on the Houston-Bowery Wall, literally. Perched on a scissor lift with two assistants, he could be seen busily slathering the surface with wheatpaste and gluing up panels that depict some of his most iconic (and potentially polarizing) Popaganda imagery. One of the pieces is a parody of 7-Eleven that reads: “9/11. The 24/7 excuse for everything.” Another advertises: “Magical Messiah meat $6.66 lb.” UPDATE: Here’s what it looks like as of 5PM.

English told ANIMAL that once he was done wheatpasting the background that will include his Temper Tot character — a baby Hulk of sorts — in the center of what will look like a patchwork American flag, he will also embellish the mural with paint.

Ron’s wife Tarssa said it’s a tribute to the site’s original owner, Tony Goldman, who apparently was really fond of the superhero parody. When I asked him if he thinks people will find the mural controversial, English said, “Maybe if we were in Texas.”
