Japanese artist Sebastian Masuda, who helped bring “kawaii culture” mainstream, wants to create a giant, cute time capsule in the shape of a Japanese bear in New York City. In this interactive art project, called Time After Time people are encouraged to fill a semi-transparent bear-like character with keepsakes and other personal items, creating a massive and colorful time capsule. The event will take place on May 3rd at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza.
Having already launched one in Miami, and looking forward to launching several others, Masuda hopes that “the capsules will ultimately be joined together to become one massive sculpture and displayed in Tokyo in time for the 2020 Olympic Games,” according to a Kickstarter he launched for the New York sculpture.
The Kickstarter is a “Staff Pick,” yet it is unclear what, exactly, the $20,000 in funds will be used for. It seems the event is happening regardless of whether the funds are secured (the Japan Society announced it back in March, for example). The Kickstarter is frustratingly ambiguous, specifying only that backers pledging $600 or more will be funding school buses transporting students to and from the Time After Time capsule event. But if you like Masuda and his kitschy pop art, you may consider supporting him anyway. And hey, the rewards are pretty cool.
