The beloved Long Island City Clock Tower will not be demolished. DNAinfo reports that the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission cast a unanimous vote, hailing it an “iconic” landmark on Tuesday.
LPC Chair Meenakshi Srinivasan released the following statement:
“For nearly a century, the Queens Clock Tower building has been one of Long Island City’s most recognizable structures, greeting hundreds of thousands of commuters as they enter the borough.”
The 11-story tower, once the neighborhood’s tallest building, was built in 1927. It has since been dwarfed by imposing modern structures, but it’s nice to know there’s still a place for history among the new condos, apartment buildings, and retail shops. Said Srinivasan, “The Commission is proud to recognize this iconic building, which represents a significant period of development in Long Island City.”
