Downpour Floods Parts of Queens, Staten Island and Brooklyn

June 1, 2015 | Prachi Gupta

The downpour that flooded parts of Brooklyn, Staten Island and Queens on Sunday night will continue throughout Monday and Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Sunday’s heavy rains started around 6 PM, bringing between 2 to 3 inches an hour, the Daily News reports. The rainfall interrupted rail and air transportation and turned the several expressways into waterways:

In New York City, flooding closed the Long Island Expressway in both directions at Utopia Parkway in Queens and an entrance ramp on the Jackie Robinson Parkway at Union Turnpike.

High water slowed traffic on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and delayed some Staten Island Railway service.

In Queens, the 104th Precinct closed off part of Cyrpres Avenue after a sinkhole developed at a construction site and swallowed an SVU.
