According to a report by the Post, most cabbies who have been involved in fatal or serious accidents in recent years are still behind the wheel. The tabloid looked at 16 at all taxi crashes since 2009, and of the 16 that resulted in the death or maiming of a passenger or pedestrian, only two drivers had their licenses revoked.
The deadly drivers who are still at it include Usman Gul, 33, who killed a deaf five-year-old in 2012, Koffi Komlani, 54, who killed a nine-year-old who was crossing the street with his father, and Faysal Himon, 24, who infamously maimed Sian Green, a British tourist, last year. According to the Taxi and Limo Commission, a cabbie who kills a pedestrian could be back in his car the very next day.
“This culture of acceptance that traffic fatalities and serious injuries are the normal course of urban living, like the weather, is no longer acceptable,” Gene Russianoff of the Straphangers Campaign advocacy group told the Post. “It is not acceptable to have people who have killed pedestrians or grievously harmed them to maintain their license.”
