Limited ferry service resumed Wednesday morning after flooding left hundreds of people stuck on Fire Island.
According to CBS, the floods that came with Tuesday’s nor’easter storm are being called the worst to hit the island community since Hurricane Sandy. Conditions related to the storm caused authorities to deem the waters too dangerous to operate the ferries, but as of 7 AM they’ve begun to work again. Service from Sayville to Fire Island will not resume until Thursday morning.
Fire Island Fire Chief Ian Levine told CBS, “It’s bad. Our fire house, which is half way through the island towards the ocean, has about 6 to 8 inches of water in it.”
Areas of Long Island and the Jersey Shore have also seen heavy rain fall that is expected to continue throughout Wednesday. Scattered snow showers will also guarantee a thoroughly soggy experience for everyone around the region.
