Having a legal weed plug is cool, but having a legal weed plug who also has coffee and other beverages for sale, plus a place to light up in NYC is a potential game changer for the state, the nation, and possibly, the world. State Senator Luis Sepúlveda, whose district includes a section of the Bronx, recently introduced bill S5346 to "allow municipalities with jurisdiction over the premises to permit a licensee to conduct business activities on the premises other than smoking, vaping or ingestion of cannabis." The proposed "cannabis consumption lounges," would permit dispensary owners to develop additional revenue streams and give stoners a venue to socialize at and test the merch, while staying hopped up on caffeine. This is a great way for newly-opened dispensaries to create a repertoire with patrons and develop a loyal customer base.

Anyone who has traveled to Amsterdam, can appreciate the civility that its globally renowned coffee shops have provided for weed tourists over the past few decades and that experience could be just what’s needed to make recreational cannabis work in a saturated market where virtually every New Yorker is already weed dealer-adjacent. "Mayor Eric Adams said social media is to blame. “Some of these sites, they’re more addictive than drugs, people can’t get off them. And you start duplicating this behavior.” He’s urging elected federal officials to look into the effect social media has on fueling the fire.

NBC reports that subway surfing incidents have skyrocketed in recent years:
In 2022, there were 928 reports of such incidents. That’s more than double the number reported the year before (206) and in 2020 (199), though those years may have seen data impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

MTA chairman Janne Lieber blamed the uptick of subway surfing squarely on social media and on Wednesday, implored companies such as Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter, to take down all videos depicting subway surfing. During a radio interview, Bieber likened the highly dangerous activity to Russian roulette. “The right thing to do is to not put up these videos, which obviously have negative consequences,” said Lieber. “If they were running videos of people playing Russian roulette with live bullets, they would understand the consequences and this is the equivalent for kids.”

For some, it’s a no-brainer. Remove the harmful content and the harmful actions will stop, right? Maybe! But where should these platforms draw the line? Every day, their algorithms serve up a buffet of New York City youth engaged in questionable antics, from dangling their legs off the ledges of skyscrapers, to jumping from girder to girder on elevated lines, to swerving bikes into buses and acts of parkour that would impress even the most seasoned stuntmen. Graffiti writers also often risk personal safety to gain recognition in the real world and online. Should they get removal notices too? How about drivers who cut it up through traffic? Let’s not forget the maniacs who parachute off buildings? Should everything dangerous be removed from social media? (story continues on www.animalnewyork.com)

"As a young girl growing up in Massapequa — aka “Matzoh Pizza” — during the ’50s and ’60s, Meryl Meisler ’s childhood on Long Island was filled with scenes of suburban bliss. She plié’d and releve’d in ballet class, dazzled at twirl, and amassed an impressive array of service badges as a Girl Scout. But within her picture perfect life, Meisler yearned for something more — something magical that was wholly out of this world.

The seeds were first planned during the summer of ’62, when Meisler and a squadron of Girl Scouts camped out on the beach overnight. Amid the preteen chatter, Meisler overheard the girls whispering about a place out in the ocean called “Fire Island,” where naked fairies flittered to and fro, living in quaint seaside cottages with names like Shirley Temple, the patron saint of mid-century theater Kids.

Later that summer, Marilyn Monroe died and with her passing, the 1950s had come to an end. The claustrophobic image of a cookie cutter culture — white, cis-heteronormative nuclear families living in identical houses cropping up across wide swaths of suburban terrain — was decidedly out of vogue as the Swinging Sixties unleashed a host of liberation movements that reimagined freedom and justice for all.

All across the nation, people from the Black, Latino, Native American, Women, and LGBTQ communities rose up to claim their constitutional rights, pushing back against a system that profited off their exploitation and disenfranchisement. They rallied, pushing through the single greatest era of progressive legislation since the New Deal, each movement building upon one another to establish liberty and justice for all amidst the explosive backdrop of the Sexual Revolution. In this singular moment in American history, a long-standing schism that first broke open during the Civil War, reasserted itself, creating the foundation upon which the Culture Wars have been fought ever since."
