The DEA, a federal agency whose big brother tactics are far scarier than previously imagined — or revelaed by the Snowden leaks — still maintains a very draconian assessment of cannabis; now even pediatricians are asking it to gets its shit together.

In recent years, there have been major advancements in the medicinal weed industry leading to several reported successes in treating kids suffering from epilepsy with cannabis oil. Some families have packed up and moved to states where medical weed is legal to ensure access to the medicine they need, while others are forced to break the law in order to keep their kids from having seizures.

But weed is currently classified as a Schedule 1 drug which means it has “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” This designation is reserved for “the most dangerous drugs,” and puts it in the same category as a heroin, LSD and molly, making it virtually impossible to get a hold of for research purposes.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is urging the DEA to change weed’s status according to the Huffington Post:

“The AAP strongly supports research and development of pharmaceutical cannabinoids and supports a review of policies promoting research on the medical use of these compounds,” the AAP statement reads. To that end, the group recommends that the DEA reschedule marijuana from a Schedule I controlled substance to Schedule II.”
