It’s Hard to Be Not Rich in Manhattan

January 21, 2013 | Samer Kalaf

The New York Times has got the scoop for you. It turns out that living costs in Manhattan are more expensive than other parts of the country, like, for example, Kansas. This revelation really sucks for Manhattan’s middle class, because now they no longer exist, according to the Times. Rest in peace, middle class.

The average Manhattan apartment, per month, costs $2,800 more than the average national rental rate. The article also defines Manhattan’s bracket of middle class as falling between $80,000 and $235,000. To achieve the standard of living achieved by a woman living in Manhattan and earning $166,000 a year, you’d need only $70,000 a year somewhere else in the U.S.

Here is the obligatory distressed not-super-rich-person-who-can-still-afford-to-live-in-Manhattan quote that accompanies stories like this:

Even the local restaurants give Ms. Azeez the sense that she is now living as an economic minority in her own neighborhood.

“There’s McDonald’s, Mexican and Nobu,” she said, and nothing in between.

Limited takeout options! Here is a sad face for Karen Azeez: :(.
