Police Crack Down On Cyclists In Wake Of Pedestrian Death

09.23.14 Rhett Jones

Since a pedestrian died after being struck by a cyclist in Central Park, the NYPD has started another crackdown on petty traffic violations.

Over the weekend, the police issued 103 summonses, mostly in an area of five square blocks on the west side of Central Park. According to the NYPD, 29 riders were cited for failing to yield to pedestrians, 26 ran red lights and 30 received tickets for wearing headphones.

The police department hasn’t said how long it will be continuing the surge on traffic violations by cyclists. Monday was dominated by the arrests of over 100 protesters in Manhattan that include a polar bear, so cops had their hands full. (Photo: @clark)
