To raise awareness for AIDS and the upcoming World AIDS day (December 1st), Germany’s das comitee produced these dirty despot posters. Hopefully the ad agency didn’t do the tacky thing and also sign the public versions of them. Hitler and Saddam look relatively authentic, but, uh, that Photoshopped Stalin isn’t even close to accurate. The ads direct you to this scary red-hued website where a counter shows the current AIDS death number—a number that ticks up every fifteen seconds. Art professor and sculptor Ottmar Hörl created this golden, Hilter-saluting garden gnome and officials in Germany are trying to determine if it’s illegal or not. Under their constitution, basically anything that has to do with the Nazi party, like swastikas, is banned. But as the artist notes, “presenting the master race as garden gnomes” represents pure satire and if censored, German authorities will be treading very dangerously to the sordid past they’re trying to avoid. “In 1942 it would have been the Nazis massacring me because of this piece,” says Hörl. |Spiegel|
